Hyderabad: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Union Ministry of Power has adopted a multi-pronged approach including focusing on market surveillance to strengthen the implementation of the successful star labeling programme for appliances across the country.

The initiatives aim to empower consumers, promote energy conservation, and contribute to environmental well-being. Through focus on market surveillance and consumer awareness, BEE is equipping State Designated Agencies (SDAs) with the necessary tools for robust market surveillance. This will ensure the integrity of labelled products and build consumer confidence in the program, a press release issued by BEE stated.

Workshops like the one planned for SDAs of Southern States in Kochi (Kerala) from March 14-15 will play a crucial role in achieving this goal. The star label, a hallmark of energy efficiency, was launched in 2006. BEE said the star labeling programme has been a game-changer.

BEE Director General Abhay Bakre recently reviewed the progress of implementing the initiative with Deputy DG Asok Kumar, Secretary Milind Deora and other seniors. He said the programme has yielded remarkable results. It has led to substantial savings of 109 billion units of electricity and a reduction of 88 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2019. The programme’s impact continued to grow in 2020-21 alone as it facilitated savings of 56 billion units of electricity, translating to a cost saving of over Rs 30,000 crore and a CO2 emission reduction of 46 million tonnes.

The release said BEE is urging all categories of consumers to make a conscious choice by opting for star-rated appliances. This will not only save them money but also contribute to environmental protection. It said BEE acknowledges the proactive role played by States like, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka and UTs such as Andamans & Nicobar islands, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep in promoting energy efficiency effectively.
